What’s in a name?

Well, quite a lot actually

And in marketing, a name is the difference between customers knowing who you are instantly, and forgetting you in favour of a more familiar competitor.

Naming your business is one of the first – and potentially the most difficult – steps to building your brand, but some companies hit the nail on the head. That’s why there are countless examples of branded products whose names have found their way into our standard lexicon – the hoover, for instance, or the jacuzzi. Meanwhile search engine giant Google has become so prevalent that it is now used as a verb.

These are just five brands with memorable, entertaining and sometimes hilarious names – take a look

1. We Buy Any Stairlift

As the name suggests, We Buy Any Stairlift specialise in second-hand stairlift removals, and will pay for used stairlifts.

The company recycles working machines and offers competitive pricing on a number of top stairlift brands. Its name is short, snappy, direct and tells you everything you need to know about the company.

Oh, and it’s catchy too.

2. Morrisingh’s

This local store in Newcastle offers a pun on the owner’s name.

But Morrisingh’s is the second iteration of the convenience store, which was originally known as Singhsbury’s when Jel Singh Nagra took over from a family member in 2011.

However, pending legal action from an unnamed supermarket giant, Mr Nagra was forced to rename his store, and did so pretty creatively. No repercussions have been reported yet since the company’s name change.

3. Curl Up & Dye

You might shudder at its rather sinister name, but there’s no doubt it gets straight to the point.

Curling and dyeing are just two of the services offered by this Bolton-based hairdresser, who recently went viral on Twitter for their clever naming. And with local reviews from very satisfied customers, their work will not, in fact, make you want to curl up and die.

4. Spruce Springclean

Need we say more?

The carpet cleaning shop based in Cornwall was voted as having the best business name in the UK thanks to its clever pun on US rock icon Bruce Springsteen in a 2017 Vistaprint survey.

The company’s cleaning and upholstery services come highly recommended according to their views, and their name has certainly struck a chord with the British public.

5. Surelock Homes

Although the Portsmouth-based locksmith was beat out to the top spot in the aforementioned survey, Surelock Homes was a strong contender for the best named business in Britain without a doubt.

Operating seven days a week, the company offers discounts to senior citizens, emergency services and NHS workers, and prides themselves on an average response time of 30 minutes, making them a fantastic and reliable local service.

These are just five brands whose names are brimming with personality – certain not to get forgotten in a hurry!
