Duncan MacLeod: Video Production, Animation, Live Streaming and Video Content Strategy

May 22, 2022

Crosscut specialise in video production, animation, live streaming and video content strategy. We strive to provide a personable, high quality service designed to get you results. No jargon, no fluffy marketing-speak. We’re a simple creative video agency which is full of personality.

Tell us about yourself?

Since I was a teenager I always actually more interested in post-production. I enjoyed editing together fun videos myself and my friends made, including highlights videos of Leicester City matches… From there I studied Media Production at University, and started freelancing once I left. Freelancing is hard when you start out, but after a couple of years myself and my business partner Dan Flanders used these years of freelance video production to found Crosscut Media in 2016.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

In business terms, I would tell my self to think of the bigger picture. It’s quite easy when working every day in your business to not focus on where you’re going – or more importantly, where you want to go. Having an action plan in place, and goals for our business is essential to keeping us moving forward.

What problem does your business solve?

We help businesses within the Leicester and Leicestershire produce high quality and creative videos.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

Crosscut was created out of mine and my business partners desire to grow. We wanted to have a trading name which people could associate us with. We find the problem we solve for our clients is being able to produce high quality products whilst working quickly. Our clients enjoy our flexibility and creativity most whilst working with us.

What is your magic sauce?

We feel we offer clients high quality videos without any of the fluffy marketing speak. It’s easy to get bogged down in saying phrases like ‘out of the box’ and ‘blue sky thinking’ when pitching ideas to clients, but do any of those phrases have any substance? Tangibly, what do they mean? We cut through that marketing speak, to give clients a clear idea of what we’re creating for them, why it will work and what it’ll cost.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

We aim to grow more into the creative and narrative based video production sector. Focusing on larger and bigger productions to produce high quality videos for our clients. We aim to bring more people into our team to help us achieve these goals.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

My biggest challenge has been transitioning from a sole trader to a manager. Going from working on projects which I can see through from start to finish – to trusting my team in producing the same quality content. Making sure I don’t micro-manage and allow the team to grow and put their own stamp on projects is something I have had to contend with.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?
