Europe’s smallest country is Estonia. Estonia is one of the smallest EU, Eurozone, NATO, OECD, and Schengen countries with 1.3 million people.

Despite this, Estonia is at the forefront of digital control and the birthplace of Digital 5. (D5). In December 2014, Estonia adopted a new idea called e-Residency. Freelancers, business owners, international partners, and other non-residents with ties to Estonia can use Estonia’s e-Residency program to simplify life and business. An Estonian e-Residency gives you the legal right to live and work anywhere in the EU, making it easy to start a company, grow a current one, trade, or go to school.

E-Residence: What Is It?

E-Residency is a digital identity issued by the state and a paperless business environment that gives citizens access to Estonian e-government services. The Estonian government grants E-Residency to non-resident Estonian citizens who want to use Estonian and EU e-services.

Many government entities promote the national e-Residency scheme. e-Residents can use internet services in any EU nation because Estonia is a member.

Unlike a visa, the e-Resident ID cannot be used to enter the EU or work in Estonia. E-Residency avoids taxation.

With an Estonian e-Residency, a digital entrepreneur can establish and run a European Union-based company from anywhere in the world. As of October 2022, 94,000 people from 170 countries had applied for e-Residency, resulting in 22,000 new Estonian businesses. After submitting an application online and paying the state fee of 265 EUR, applicants will receive their E-Residency kits in person at one of the authorized points of issue.
