  • Bath and York named the best staycation hotspots based on good mobile phone coverage
  • Two of the nation’s National Parks rank among lowest on the list
  • Gurnsey, Salisbury and Whitby also come bottom of the list for mobile phone signal
  • Major British cities also examined for coverage levels London ranking as one of ten for best coverage

Affordable Mobiles, winners of the Uswitch Mobile Reseller of the Year award, have conducted an in-depth study into the UK’s coverage levels.

The research looks at both the overall coverage and the coverage for individual devices in various staycation hotspots around the UK.

Scoring was based on 4G and 5G signal, as well as the coverage rating on a number of the latest best-selling handsets from two of the nationals largest network providers.

It’s revealed that Bath and York top the list for places that have the best network coverage, with an impressive 4 out of 5 rating based on the above statement.

Snowdonia and the Lake District were among 5 destinations found to have the worst coverage rating with 2 out of 5.

Guernsey, Salisbury and Whitby made up the rest of the 5 with the 13 other locations examined coming joint third at a 2.5 rating.

Research also shows the UK’s coverage ‘blackspots’ where no signal is available, which discovered that 3 out of the 6 found were located in the Shetland Islands.

Rosedale Abbey in North Yorkshire and Alwinton in Northumberland appeared as blackspots despite coverage being available in virtually all the surrounding areas.

An examination of the UK major cities formed part of the research and found some unexpected results, as locations such as Bristol, Southampton and Derby all ranked last with a rating of 1.

Jessica Canning, Mobile expert at Affordable Mobiles commented on the research, “It is really interesting to see first-hand the differences in the UK’s coverage from place to place. The study has unveiled some surprising results.

“Bristol is a good example of a surprising result as I think we would all expect a city of its size to have better mobile coverage. However, we would expect this score to improve in the coming months as 5G continues to be improved and rolled out around the UK.

“Looking at the more rural staycation destinations, it is a pleasant surprise that most have good coverage levels and shows how the UK has improved its coverage levels across the board in the last few years.

“If we looked at the same data 10 years ago, it would be a major shock if Loch Lomond or the Isle of Skye had any coverage at all, whereas it is now clear to see the investment is paying off and soon there will be very few places in Britain where you won’t be able to get any signal.”
