As a Man Thinketh by James Allen
- Publisher: Loyal Books
- Total Episodes: 8
“A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts,” is one of the quotes from James Allen’s classic self help books, As a Man Thinketh. Published in 1902, it provides many more such insightful concepts on the power of thought and its effect on a human being’s personality and behavior. This volume is more of a literary essay than a complete book and its title is based on a Biblical proverb, “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” Taking this piece of ancient wisdom further, James Allen explores the far-reaching effects of the inner workings of a person’s mind and motivation. He proposes that projecting one’s own desires, goals and needs in the outer world can provide clues to a person’s character. Thinking and the subconscious mind are assumed to be hidden from the outside world, and hence powerless to change the course of events or circumstances of one’s life. However, in this book, Allen presents ideas that can harness this subterranean force and bend our lives to our will if we so choose. James Allen was a British writer who wrote mostly about everyday philosophy for the lay person and was in a sense, a pioneer of the self help movement. His books and poems were inspirational pieces, meant to help people realize their own powers and take charge of their lives rather than being mere tools in the hands of destiny. Born in a working class family in Leicester, England, Allen and his younger brother grew up in straitened circumstances. His father, a factory worker, traveled to America in search of a better job, but was tragically attacked and killed by criminals in New York. James, the older son, was compelled to leave school and seek work back in England. He found employment as a secretary to a stationer and later worked as a journalist. He later discovered a deep and enduring interest in spiritual matters when he began working as a writer with a magazine devoted to spiritual themes. His first book From Poverty to Power was published in 1901. Subsequently, he also launched his own spiritual magazine. As a Man Thinketh was his third and most famous book. It became an instant bestseller and the sales of this tiny volume were so great that they allowed Allen and his family to retire to the country, buy a house and live in relative comfort for the rest of their life. The book’s language is very simple and the message presented here will certainly provide a basis for further thought and meditation.
South! The Story of Shackleton’s Last Expedition 1914-1917 by Ernest Shackleton
- Publisher: Loyal Books
- Total Episodes: 37
The expedition was given the grand title of The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Due to be launched in 1914, two ships were to be employed. The first, the lead vessel, fittingly named the Endurance was to transport the team to the Weddell Sea from where the great explorer Ernest Shackleton and five others would cross the icy wastes of Antarctica on foot. The second ship, the Aurora was to approach the continent from the other side and put down supplies at various points to help the explorers. The nearly 3000 km expedition was funded largely on the strength of Shackleton’s formidable reputation. Many private individuals contributed along with some funds from the British government. However, the shadow of war was looming across Europe. The expedition also included more than 70 dogs who were kept in the charge of an experienced veterinary doctor. However, the Endurance soon ran into problems. Within a month of its departure, it hit an ice floe and was completely trapped in frozen ice. It began to drift northwards, dashing Shackleton’s hopes of an early culmination. South! The Story of Shackleton’s Last Expedition 1914-1917 by Ernest Shackleton is a brilliant portrayal of this doomed enterprise told by the leader himself. What makes the book so interesting is Shackleton’s own matter of fact courage and his extreme sense of responsibility for his crew. The book which was published long after the actual events took place, was released just a year before Shackleton’s death. His physical and mental health were completely broken and the outbreak of war had also taken its toll. Though he suffered from serious ill-health, he insisted on being conscripted and also undertook several diplomatic missions on behalf of the British Government. He was an extremely charismatic figure, worshipped by his crew members and deeply admired by statesmen like Winston Churchill. He died of a heart attack in the South Georgia Islands near South America and he was buried there on the request of his wife. This was indeed a fitting end to his life, “on a island far from civilization, surrounded by stormy tempestuous seas and in the vicinity of one of his great exploits,” as his physician noted in his personal diary. South… is mainly compiled from the logs of the Endurance and the Aurora, with plenty of observations and descriptions by Shackleton himself. The harsh and terrible beauty of the snowy continent are wonderfully and passionately described. For readers who love the drama of an expedition to the least known ends of the earth, led by a figure of such heroic proportions, this is indeed a great read.

Hi my name is DJ Mike Speed, I’m 47 and live in West Yorkshire near Leeds. I’ve been dj’ing since about 1986. Started off in a youth club playing all kinds of stuff, but early acid house, hip house and classic british hip hop kept appearing in the mix, this is when I started to collect 12″ vinyl with my twin brother, there was the odd bit of cheese added at times! In the late part of 1991 we both got shows on the local pirate radio station Wacky FM, I played 9 while midnight every Friday night and also dj’ed with my brother on a sunday morning. We transformed Wacky FM in to a all dance music station nothing like this was being played like this in our area, a longtime before the likes of Kiss FM yorkshire. I also played a regular show on sister station Unique FM in Huddersfield. After a number of DTI raids, it was time to call it a day in 1995. I was mainly playing Oldskool Hardcore, Jungle, Rave, Early Techno and some Commercial Dance. I’d been mixing on all different types of belt driven decks until I bought a pair of Technics in 1995, I always admit the belt driven decks did help me out on my mixing, but the Technics helped me so much. My music tastes were changing around this time too, delving in to more Uplifting House & and the Harder Piano tunes after starting to go to the ARK nights in Leeds. In 1996 I got a slot in a club, Eruptions, playing alongside some great Dj’s including Steve Lugi, Leeds Gallery veteran until 1999. My music was getting harder, playing the very early Hard House sounds & Uplifting House, developing in to a Funky Hard house / Hard house sound with the odd bit of Edgier Harder Trance. I pretty much kept this style until around 2003 doing the odd club gig and loads of house party’s. In 2003 I decided to start collecting Oldskool Hardcore, Jungle, Acid, Rave and hip house tunes in digital format & the odd bit of vinyl still. I know do mainly house party’s & concentrate on doing good classic sets. I also keep up to date with all kinds of different trends of electronic music & dip in to all kinds of different styles. I’m in to all kinds of music technology, including Tracktor & Ableton Live (currently in learning!). I’ve also started mixing digitally too. Also dj’ed on Renegade Radio for 4 years & Phatt 100Fm in Huddersfield for 2 years. I’ve been playing again at Oldskool Events over the last 12 years, mostly on vinyl and recently mastered CDJ’s. Played on the same line-ups as Seb Fontaine (Radio 1), Paul Bleasdale (Cream), Alex P, Rob Tissera, Vertigo, DJ Sy, Andy Farley, Altern8, K-Klass, Dream Frequency to name a few :). A few events I’ve played for are Rejuvenation – Leeds, Joy – Leeds, Quench, and resident for Free2Dance in Preston. A dream come true! Divine Companion, The by ALLEN, James
- Publisher: LibriVox
- Total Episodes: 6
James Allen was a British philosophical writer known for his inspirational books and poetry and as a pioneer of the self-help movement. In the introduction Lily Allen writes: “It cannot be said of this book that James Allen wrote it at any particular time or in any one year, for he was engaged in it over many years and those who have eyes to see and hearts to understand will find in its pages the spiritual history of his life. It was his own wish that The Divine Companion should be the last manuscript of his to be published. ‘It is the story of my soul,’ he said, ‘and should be read last of all my books, so that the student may understand and find my message in its pages.'” (Summary by Wikipedia and Lily Allen)

Charles Haddon (C.H.) Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) was a British Particular Baptist preacher and is still known today as the “Prince of Preachers”. He was a strong figure in the Reformed Baptist tradition, defending the Church in agreement with the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith understanding, and opposing the liberal and pragmatic theological tendencies in the Church of his day. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to around 10 million people, often up to ten times each week at different places. In this series of devotionals, he challenges each of us to examine our own heart to make sure our faith is solidly grounded, to count the cost, and to experience the promise of grace. “It would be very difficult to say how far a man may go in religion, and yet die in his sins; how much he may look like an heir of heaven, and yet be a child of wrath. Many unconverted men have a belief which is similar to faith, and yet it is not true faith. The life of God within the soul creates an infinite difference between the man who has it and the man who has it not; and the point is, to make sure that we have this life. I desire to help my reader in the business of self-examination. I would have him go further than examination, and attain to such abundance of grace that his holy and happy state shall become a witness to himself. No man can lose by honestly searching his own heart.” (Summary by WYSIWYG, MaryAnn and Charles Spurgeon)

The Men from the Ministry

The series was about lazy, bungling, incompetent civil servants, "Number One" – Roland Hamilton-Jones (Wilfrid Hyde-White) and later Deryck Lennox-Brown (Deryck Guyler), "Number Two" – Richard Lamb (Richard Murdoch), with their dim, typo-prone, teenage secretary, Mildred Murfin (Norma Ronald), all watched-over by the lecherous, pompous, self-seeking Permanent Under-Secretary Sir Gregory Pitkin (Roy Dotrice and later Ronald Baddiley), all members of the British Civil Service based in Whitehall. The stories centered on their General Assistance Department (analogous to the "Department of Administrative Affairs" in the later Yes Minister), which helps other governmental departments. Instead of assistance, the department creates mix-ups, misunderstandings and cock-ups that lead to a telling-off from Sir Gregory, who sees his 'hard earned' Civil Service career and pension disappearing.
The Thunder Mutters
- Publisher: Becky Dellow/Adam Horovitz
- Total Episodes: 17
The Thunder Mutters is a podcast in love with music, and with the music of words. Presented fortnightly by poet Adam Horovitz and fiddle player Becky Dellow, it takes its name from the poem by John Clare. We will be exploring the connections between music and poetry, concentrating for the first year of the podcast on Clare’s ‘The Shepherd’s Calendar’ and on the tunes Clare gathered. Every month, we will bring you the appropriate section of the Calendar interspersed with relevant tunes that Clare himself collected and likely played. We will be discussing the provenance of the tunes and leavening the academic with a healthy dose of poetry and music in performance. In the weeks in between, we will present shorter shows exploring the works of the Romantic poets and others from the 18th and 19th centuries, again always interweaving tunes that the poets themselves might have heard or played amongst the poems and conversation. Having said that we will be presenting poets and tunes from the 18th and 19th centuries, it is very much our intention to also invite living poets and musicians to respond to the work of the poems and tunes we present. We believe that music and poetry are perhaps the best ways of holding an on-going conversation with our ancestors and our descendants, and are keen to find ways of furthering that conversation through The Thunder Mutters. We hope that you enjoy this podcast. If you do, we hope you might be inspired to subscribe and contribute to our Patreon in some small way, to help mitigate the costs of producing the show, (https://patreon.com/thethundermutters) and that you will consider following us on Facebook (fb.me/thethundermutters) and/or Twitter (https://twitter.com/ThunderMutters) If you enjoy the shows, we’d love to hear from you. Becky Dellow is an experienced and versatile fiddle player who fuses fiddle traditions from around the British Isles. “The tradition of fiddle playing in my family goes back at least five generations,” says Becky, “to my great great grandfather Thomas Hampton, a fiddle player from Hereford. It was his hand-written tune manuscript book that inspired my PhD research under the supervision of trad singer and academic, Dr Fay Hield.” Since completing her PhD, Dr. Dellow has continued to carry out tune research, contributing to academic journals and conferences, and uses the research to develop her performance as a folk musician. Adam Horovitz is a poet, editor and performer. His first collection of poetry, Turning, was published in 2011 and his most recent book, The Soil Never Sleeps, explores the farmlands of Britain 200 years on from Clare, who was a strong influence on the book. He has collaborated numerous times with musicians, and has presented two shows with Becky. The first was for the Laurie Lee centenary. “I asked Becky because Laurie was a fiddle player as well as a poet,” he says, “not knowing at the time that her grandfather, Charles Hampton played in a band with Laurie in the late 1920s. It was perfect synchronicity, and that surprise has led to The Thunder Mutters.”
