Alex Lees: Building a Community and Supporting Both Universities and the Enterprising and Innovating Businesses To Achieve a Holistic Video Marketing Strategy

January 20, 2022

We help drive awareness and growth of innovation, building a community and supporting both universities and the enterprising and innovating businesses to achieve a holistic video marketing strategy.

Tell us about yourself?

I started my career studying a masters in engineering, but towards the end of this, I led to realise that I wanted to have a career that was more creative, but enabled me to support the growth of Innovation. As time has gone on I have had the pleasure of supporting startups to raise initial investment, larger corporate to deliver their messages, and have most recently niched in bridging the gap between higher education and innovating businesses.

I have supported supported over 70 innovation companies some of which were investment projects, helping to secure over £20 million in investment.

In addition, built on going relationships with a number of Universities to deliver case study videos, training videos, enterprise explainer videos and more, with the objective of bringing innovating businesses and higher education together.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

If I could go back, I would have looked to build upon a niche a lot sooner. Trying to be everything to everyone, ends up leading to being nothing to know one, and so finding and sticking to a niche that you enjoy, but is also profitable, would have moved things forward quicker.

What problem does your business solve?

We solve the problem of making innovating businesses aware of what higher education can offer to them. To enable better relationships and greater innovation to occur as a result.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

We want higher education managers, marketers and academics to maximise the reach to internal and external businesses to create world class innovations and collaborations.

What is your magic sauce?

As a company we have the advantage of an in depth knowledge of Higher Education enterprise and Innovating businesses form a basic variety of angles. Including:

  • Sitting on a University board.
  • Sitting on Santander University panels.
  • Part of University investment panel for business.
  • Part of the enterprise system.
  • Supporting academics with video related courses and marketing activity.
  • Supporting with MBA projects.
  • Making connections with Alumni.
  • Creating strategies for large scale business investment.
  • Working very closely to businesses to understand their needs and develop video strategies.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

The vision for Tale Production is to be the go to company for Higher Education video marketing, delivering content strategies that drive innovation and growth of UK and international business.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

The biggest challenge I have faced is having the confidence to niche down into an area. As a creative it’s easy to want to do every project that comes our way, but this only leads to a diluted vision for the business and lack of growth.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?

We want to continue to learn more about higher education and the challenges being faced. So we want to encourage higher education enterprise manager, marketers and academics to get in touch and book a free 20 minute discovery call to help us to find the best way to help you to maximise the impact and reach of what you do.
