Tell us about yourself?
We are a team of 3. The CEO, Mike, grew up in the US, studied in Europe and worked in London, spending more than a decade looking for a solution to the problems he faced managing the investments, pensions and property he’d accumulated across three countries.
Our COO, Ben, was originally a professional athlete before working in wealth management in London. After realising how little of the industry had been digitised and how much the client demographic was changing, he joined Mike to build a modern solution to the industry’s problems.
James, the CTO, brings several decades of experience, including a number of projects for large retail banks including RBS.
If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
We already spent a load of time speaking to users but I’d try and do even more. You can never get too much information from them!
What problem does your business solve?
Strabo solves the difficulty users face managing a whole host of different investment classes in the modern age. This is especially true across countries, but true for almost everyone: it’s never been harder to build a portfolio that matches your risk appetite and maintain it for the long term.
What is the inspiration behind your business?
We spent a cumulative 15-20 years facing the exact problem! We’ve tried every solution out there, including a range of ever more complicated Excel spreadsheets, and we want to build something more comprehensive, more flexible, and more fun to use.
What is your magic sauce?
Three things:
- More coverage: more assets, more countries and more coverage than anyone else
- Fully customisable: build your dashboard to show exactly what you want it to, and nothing else
- Forward looking: we’re looking forwards at where you’re going, not back at what you’ve spent. Set and track your goals and forecast towards them with Strabo.
What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?
We want to remove the anxiety involved with managing your investments. Choosing asset classes, rebalancing and matching your portfolio to your risk profile. Then paying the right tax on it all! Taken care of in every country you’ve lived or worked in.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
We initially built our MVP using the no-code platform Bubble. This quickly reached limitations due to the amount of data involved, so managing the migration alongside the joining of our CTO was certainly more time consuming than we could have imagined.
Fortunately we’re now on track for a September 2022 launch to a great waitlist, and we’d love to have users on board.
How do people get involved/buy into your vision?
