Renovating campervans is proving to be extremely popular in the UK according to new research by leading motorhome rental company, Camptoo.
Searches for the phrase ‘van renovations’ have risen by a massive 2000% since 2020, with searches for ‘van life’, also shooting up 2438% since 2017.
The new study found that this trend was consistent across a number of search terms relevant to campervan renovations.
‘Van conversions’ (404%), ‘DIY campervan’ (880%), ‘best van conversions’ (743%) and ‘self build campervan’ (243%) have all seen huge increases in search popularity over the last five years.
Upgrading and kitting out campervans allows people to turn their regular campers into a home away from home, with all the luxury items they need to travel across the country in comfort.
Conversions are open to interpretation, with people spending anywhere between a few hundred to tens of thousands installing beds, sofas and kitchen appliances in their vehicles.
Camptoo’s research also examined which type of specific renovations were most popular, finding beds to be top with the most searches in 2021, followed by toilets, sinks, kitchens and sofas.
‘Van sinks’ had the highest increase, out of all the renovations, rising a huge 2500% since 2018 beating ‘van kitchens’ which also had a significant increase of 1600% during the same period.
‘Van beds’ (929%) and ‘van toilets’ (766%) also saw significant increases, while ‘van sofas’ had a much lower rise at 70% over the last few years.
Camptoo’s Head of Wanderlust, Ed Bassett commented on the study saying, “While we knew van renovations were becoming more popular across the UK, we had no idea just how much demand there now is amongst the nation to kit out their campers.
“The significant increases across all the relevant keyword phrases we looked at is telling of how much the trend has grown in the last five years and with summer staycations likely to be on the agenda for most people this year, the trend should only continue on its upward path.
“As well as that, it was very interesting to see which types of conversions are most popular and while it was no surprise that beds had the highest search volume, we did not expect sinks to show the massive increase that it did.”
