There are many reasons as to why an individual would want a career change. If nothing else, it could be to earn more money. Before you take the plunge onto the employment market, you should consider a few things first, as outlined below.

Reasons You Want A Career Change

Before quitting your current job and exploring your options, you should consider the reasons that you want to change career. If it’s only over a small issue that can be easily resolved, then you may be acting too hastily.

Carefully consider the reasons that you want to leave. In the end, thinking about it for a short time can reinforce the decision you had reached before. But the truth is, you won’t know for sure without thinking about it, and you won’t want any regrets further on in your career.

Transferring Your Skills To A New Role

If you are indeed looking to start a new career in some capacity, you will need to think about your current skills. You may have been working in the same department doing the same thing for years, which means you are highly skilled at this one section of the business. This skill that you’ve picked up won’t just go away.

You will be able to use this skill within another line of career, especially if the skill is transferable in some way. Even if you will be doing something completely different, it is likely that you will be able to use this skill as a stepping stone.

No business will expect you to completely disregard any training or experience you’ve had in other roles. This is why they say that retail jobs are a great entry into any career, as you pick up a magnitude of skills. If you don’t believe it, just think about the skills you can earn in retail. You will be able to learn customer service, sales, cleaning, management, accountancy and more. All of these skills and abilities will be ones that can transfer into different roles and jobs.

If you have a certain job in mind that requires specific skills, you may have to educate yourself on these skills. You can do this in a few different ways. For example, you could sign up to a college or online school that specialises in a certain skill or talent for you to develop.

Alternatively, you could look to find a mentor who can work with you on a certain skill. Thinking of having a mentor sounds almost biblical, something that is hard to come by. You can sign up to a mentorship platform such as PushFar that allows you to find a mentor in your chosen field or search. This can allow you to match with a mentor with the skills and knowledge you seek, so that you can start working together.

Moving To A New Place

If you have decided to bite the bullet and make a career change, then it is very possible that you could find yourself moving to a new place. In fact, the decision to have a career change could have been forced by your decision to move, or you’re just fancying a change in scenery.

Bare in mind that there is more opportunities for remote working this year, and looks like there will be even more in the years to come. This means you could theoretically live anywhere you wanted, as long as you were able to work to the hours they are happy with and to the levels you expect.

If you need to physically move yourself to a new location for work, consider scoping out the area as early as possible. This will help give you more insight into the area before you arrive, and set you up nicely before arrival.

The Ethics Of A Workplace

If you have the opportunity to choose a new career, then this likely means you will have the chance to find a completely new workplace. Finding a new workplace allows you to comb through multiple businesses, allowing you to look at their ethics.

You may find that a business is offering you everything you want, but their ethics go against what you believe. Fortunately, you are in a position where you can find somewhere else, as you are starting completely fresh.

Benefit Schemes Offered

Similarly, you can look at the benefit schemes offered by businesses. You may be stuck between two businesses that are very similar in what they do, leaving you stuck with who to pick. This is why you should ask if they offer any sort of benefit scheme in the interview process. If they both do, then you will be able to compare the two and find one that you’re happy with.

Benefit schemes come in a number of different shapes and sizes. It could be a bonus that comes financially, or it could be a bonus that gives you discounts and freebies via a third person organisation. Choosing your career should mean giving yourself the chance to find somewhere you want to be, who appreciates your hard work.
